Struggles in Steel wins the Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award
Raymond Henderson, Tony Buba, and the Independent Television Service are winners of a 1999 Silver Baton Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for their PBS documentary, Struggles in Steel: A Story of African-American Steel Workers. These awards are widely regarded as the most prestigious awards in broadcast journalism.
The awards, now in the form of Gold and Silver Batons, have been awarded annually since 1942 for overall excellence in broadcast journalism. Their purpose is to bring to professional and public attention the best journalism and to honor the individuals and organizations that produced it.
In 1999, there were over 680 entries, and 12 awards were presented–including one Gold and 11 Silver Batons. Other 1999 Silver Baton winners included Ted Koppel of ABC News' Nightline and Mike Wallace of CBS News' 60 Minutes.
